7th World Thai Martial Arts Festival: 15-17 March 2011

         The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) together with Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya province, the Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Provincial Administrative Organization, and the Association Institute of Thai Martial Arts will organize “The 7th World Thai Martial Arts Festival and Wai Kru Muay Thai Ceremony 2011” between 15-17 March 2011, at Nai Khanom Tom Monument, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Stadium.

This festival aims to preserve Thai martial arts and self-defense and is a tribute to Nai Khanom Tom, who is highly regarded as a Muay Thai folk hero.

         Miss Chutathip Charoenlarp, Director of the TAT Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Office stated “This year, many activities will showcase the Wai Kru Muay Thai ceremony including the Muay Thai exhibition and Muay Thai performance. This will be accompanied by a demonstration of the making of Thai handicraft, and Thai cuisine. For those who have a special interest in the art of Muay Thai, there will be a chance for them to learn about this combat sport. A welcome party will be held for the boxers who will be attending this festival, taking place on Tuesday, 15 March 2011, at Wat Mahathat, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya province. More than 300 boxers from 30 countries including the UK, Canada, Russia, Korea, France, Ukraine, and South Africa, are expected to participate in this festival and show their appreciation for the beautiful art of Muay Thai."

             Mr Pichai Piemthongkum from the Department of Tourism and Sport Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya added “At this year’s festival, there will be a Muay Thai tournament with boxers contending for the Nai Khanom Tom belt with a cash prize for the weight divisions of 60, 65, 70, and 80 kilograms. There will also be a Wai Kru competition for students. Some 300 applicants have applied for this event. Out of these, 60 qualifying contestants will receive a cash prize of 1,000 Baht each. The winners in first, second, and third place will receive a cash prize of 10,000, 5,000 and 3,000 Baht, respectively. The consolation prize is 2,000 Baht. During this festival, other forms of entertainment will be offered to those who plan to attend.
